Relieve Pain, Save Your Oral Health with Emergency Toothache Relief

Severe tooth pain is a sure sign that something isn’t right with your oral health. Several conditions, including dental abscess, injury, or decay, can cause intense tooth pain. Whatever the cause, a debilitating toothache requires urgent dental care to relieve pain and possibly save your tooth.

Unfortunately, toothaches can strike when you least expect them — on a weekend, after business hours, or during a vacation. Whatever the case, an emergency dentist in McDonough, Georgia, can provide pain relief. At Your Smile Dental Wellness Center, Dr. Yvonne Caton-Hospedales and her team are always ready to help you when you need urgent dental care.

Why your tooth is in pain

Tooth decay is the most common cause of toothaches. If left untreated, tooth decay advances into a cavity, which lets harmful bacteria infiltrate your tooth. When the infection reaches your tooth nerves, the result is moderate to severe pain.

The other causes of tooth pain include:

  • Eruption of wisdom or permanent tooth
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Tooth grinding
  • Cracked or fractured tooth
  • Gum disease
  • Dental abscess or cyst
  • Tooth pulp inflammation (pulpitis)

When you have a toothache, you can try home remedies to relieve pain before seeing a dentist. Swishing your mouth with warm, salty water has long been known to relieve tooth pain. This saline solution helps manage inflammation and kills pain-causing bacteria. Another well-known option is using a cold compress to manage swelling and pain by numbing your nerves. Lastly, you can use hydrogen peroxide for pain relief. Simply dilute the powder with water, gargle, and spit it.

How we treat toothaches

Any pain in the mouth is a sign that you need to visit a dentist. Remember, home remedies are just a temporary fix and shouldn’t replace professional care. If tooth pain persists, you should seek emergency dental care to prevent the situation from worsening. While we offer superior tooth-saving methods, there’s a timeline within which you should react for successful treatment.

After finding out the cause of tooth pain, treatment options include:

  • Tooth fillings: Minor tooth decay and cavities can be remedied with composite fillings. Our tooth-colored fillings don’t just treat tooth damage — they restore your tooth without affecting the natural esthetics of your smile
  • Dental crown: A dental crown encases your entire tooth to treat dental damage too extensive for a typical dental filling. We use porcelain crowns to restore your tooth’s health and appearance
  • Root canal therapy: Most toothache cases are caused by an infected tooth pulp. During a root canal, we remove the diseased tooth pulp and restore your tooth with a filling or dental crown for optimal function
  • Extraction: We try as much as possible to save natural teeth, but sometimes, we can only do so much. If your tooth is beyond restoration, we recommend extraction to relieve pain and restore oral health
