When might I need dental extractions?

There are a few reasons you may need to have one or more teeth removed. Perhaps you have wisdom teeth that crowd your other molars, or in the case of baby teeth, they might prevent your adult teeth from growing incorrectly. In some other cases, people might need to have their teeth extracted due to an injury or advanced decay that has resulted in infection. No matter the reason, our experienced team is here to help! We will work with you to ensure that the extraction process is as smooth and comfortable as possible.

What can I expect during my appointment?

When you come in for your consultation appointment, Dr. Caton-Hospedales will first take some x-rays to get a better view of the affected tooth or teeth. She will then numb the area around the tooth using a local anesthetic. Once you are numbed, she uses a tool to loosen the tooth and remove it when performing a simple extraction. Sometimes, she might need to section the tooth to remove it more easily. When surgical tooth removal is necessary, additional sedation is used, and incisions are made into the natural gum tissue to access the tooth within the jaw and manually remove it. Recovery from this procedure is longer than with simple extractions.

What should I do after my appointment?

After your appointment, be sure to take it easy for the rest of the day. You might experience some bleeding and swelling, which is perfectly normal. Remember to apply ice to the affected area in 20-minute intervals throughout the day to reduce swelling. Follow aftercare instructions given by the team to reduce the risk of complications such as infection or dry socket.
